Skylark Opera
Promising Familiar, New & Out of the Blue
Lost in the Stars
Opens March 24
Saint Paul, MN ? The former North Star Opera announces its 2006-2007 season, including a repertoire that promises to live up to the company’s new name and tagline, Skylark Opera ~ Familiar, New & Out of the Blue. The re-branding represents a sharpening of focus for the company and a renewed commitment to a diverse repertoire from the opera, operetta and musical theater canons. Coming from “out of the blue” is Kurt Weill’s deeply moving musical tragedy, Lost in the Stars which opens on March 24 and stars KENNETH OVERTON and REGINA WILLIAMS.
“The 2006-2007 season marries our company’s past to its future,” said Artistic Director Steve Stucki. “Audiences who know us appreciate an experience they can’t get anywhere else: the full orchestra, the chorus, and the opportunity to closely connect with professional artists. These are elements that we do marvelously well and that Skylark Opera audiences can continue to expect.”
Skylark Opera will continue to perform all works in English in venues that are small and intimate. All performances will be conducted by Artistic Director Stucki.
“Our new name more closely captures the fun and light attributes that our core audience has come to expect,” said Managing Director Mark Junkert. “At the same time, the less literal, more evocative ‘Skylark
Opera’ will distinguish us from other performing companies, and hopefully help us attract younger audiences who may be new to opera, operetta and musical theater. The human scale of our productions and the degree to which we help audiences embrace the variety of our offerings is unique in the Twin Cities.” One of Skylark Opera’s longest serving board members, Ann Spencer, applauded the new name and season’s productions. “This is an exciting time for Skylark Opera. The combination of the new name with this season’s inspired mix of productions perfectly captures the company’s desire to reach across generations and engage audiences in a deep artistic experience.”
